Hollis Watkins - Singalong and Civil Rights Movement Stories - February 6-11, 2012

PCC proudly brings you activist and civil rights leader Hollis Watkins at several dates, times, and locations throughout the Portland Metro area this February.  Hollis Watkins continues the musical traditions of the civil rights movement in the struggle of today. Having been sustained by music when he was hanging from handcuffs in a cell in Parchman prison in the 60's, Hollis includes the musical traditions of the civil rights movement into the struggle of today, making it part of his organizing and bringing its message to a new generation of activists.  Admission is free, with limited seating.  Dates and times are:

Gender Workshop and Performance at Lewis & Clark - Feb. 25, 2012

Dr. Sawn Giammattei offers the all-day workstop: Affirmative Treatment of Gender-Variant and Transgender Children, Adolescents, and their Families at Lewis & Clark College from 9 AM-5PM Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012.  This course will examine personal biases, stages of acceptance, cultural and community issues, meeting family needs, and advocacy in a transphobic climate.  CEUs are available as well as reduced earlybird and student registration rates.

Following the workshop award winning storyteller and writer Ivan Coyote will perform More Than Two Options from 5:30-7:30PM.  The workshop fee includes admission. LGBTQQIA New Student Day at U of O - March 2, 2012

The University of Oregon is creating a special campus visit day to bring GSAs and LGBTQQIA students to the U of O campus! Students and Parents will be given a tour of campus and will get an in depth look into college life at the University of Oregon. They will gain the opportunity to learn about resources for Queer and Allied college students including information on financial aid, gender inclusive housing, support services and educational tracks.

This event is being held on Friday, March 2nd, 2012 from 9am to 4pm at the University of Oregon. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided.

This Month’s Chapter Meetings...


February PFLAG Portland Chapter Meeting

Molly Franks from the Multnomah County Health Department will be our February speaker.  In keeping with the spirit of Valentine’s Day, Molly will be talking about what else but - sex. 

Molly has long been an educator and advocate in the LGBTQ community, especially with our youth. Molly will talk about inclusive sex education and healthy relationships in addition to the new sex education law. We will participate in “5 circles of sexuality” about conceptualizing sexuality more holisticaly, including gender and sexual orientation.  Special Valentines Day treats and support groups to follow. Bring your sweetie and start a romantic evening out right!

Our monthly meeting is a chance to meet others from the African-American LGBTQ community and to find out what events are on the horizon for this very active group. Support group offered during meeting.

OSSCC, PFLAG PDX, PFLAG PDX Black Chapter, and PFLAG PDX East County  announce a new Youth Mini Grant Program!
Oregon Safe Schools and Communities Coalition in partnership with the Portland PFLAG chapters announce the 2011/2012 GSA Mini-Grant Program.
This program will fund small projects sponsored by Gay/Straight Alliances (GSAs) or other non-profit, youth oriented organizations operating within Portland or in the Portland tri-county area (Washington, Multnomah, and Clackamas counties).  Mini-grants will be limited to $250 per organization per year. The project must be planned, directed, and implemented by youth, and have a school or non-profit organization sponsor to receive funds. Grant applications will be reviewed and selected monthly.  If your organization has a project that you’d like us to consider supporting, download the grant application form here and mail it to us at the address listed therein.  Applications must be received by the 4th Monday of each month to be considered at that month’s review meeting.
